Traveling Over The Holidays

Do you have to travel over the holidays?

If so, I feel your pain.

For more than twelve years, my family lived out-of-state, away from our loved ones. Going home to visit always felt like a major military operation. Kids, luggage, dogs, snacks, traffic, weather. Ugh.

Last year, we moved back to Michigan, closer to our families. We still have a bit of a car ride, but thankfully our days of complicated travel plans have ended.

I wrote about coming home (again) for the holidays last December. You can read the story here:

Safe travels, everyone!

Pediatric Sleep Consultants

Babies are precious, aren't they? And sleeping babies are angelic.

But what about those babies that don't sleep?

My youngest son, Samuel, was a sleep terrorist. For three months of colic, that child of mine kept me hostage at all hours of the night and day. It's a wonder I was able to function at all. Add to that a husband who traveled all week, two school aged big brothers, and a breastfeeding cranky baby, and I was a basket case.

Did you know that there are now pediatric sleep consultants who can help? They will come to your home with their knowledge of sleep tips and tricks, and they will train you (and your baby) to get the good night sleep you so desperately need.

Here's a story I did recently on Pediatric Sleep Consultant Kimberly Wagner-Dabbour:

Lawn Mower Safety

We may be approaching autumn here in Michigan, but it is still lawn mower season. My Jolly Green Retriever is proof of that!

Did you know that in the United States, over eight hundred children every year are involved in a lawn mower accident? And sadly, 600 of those cases involve an amputation.

I recently spoke with a family whose son was involved in a tragic lawn mower accident. This family went on to film a Public Service Announcement for a national advocacy group. I spoke with an expert to get some safety tips. You can read the full story here:

Relocation

Relocation.

Just hearing the word "relocation" gives me a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. My family has made five moves to five states in a twelve year period. It's understandable that we would suffer a little PTSD from the experience.

Relocation is listed as one of the top three most stressful life events. It is nearly as traumatic as divorce or death of a loved one. And if you are moving with spouse and children in tow? Expect challenges.

Many real estate companies now have relocation experts on staff to make the move as stress-free as possible. I spoke with expert Susan Kellam at Reinhart Realtors in Ann Arbor. She gave some great tips for a smooth move.

Books or Tablets?

What do you prefer? Books or tablets?

I confess, I love the convenience of my tablet for flipping through a magazine or checking sites on the internet. But for actually reading a novel, I still prefer to hold a book in my hands.

How do tablets and books stack up for early readers? I asked the expert for this month's issue. You can read the story here:

Matty J's Bakery and Cafe

It's no secret that I love cafes. Add "bakery" to the name, and it's a win-win.

Shawna Sloan is a local mompreneur who got her baking start at the famous Zingerman's in Ann Arbor. I sat down to talk with her over a delicious cafe au lait. You can read the story here:

Welcome!

My name is Mary Rose Kulczak, and I have been a freelance writer for more than twenty years. I really needed a space dedicated to my published articles, stories, and general ramblings about the writing process.

This is that space! It might feel a little under-decorated right now, but once I get unpacked it will be lovely. I promise! You will want to grab a coffee and curl up in a comfy chair here.
